Njoya Angrum-Founder/Director of The Harlem Knitting Circle
It was a beautiful day! I woke up and got ready for this huge meeting that I knew was taking place today. I WAS EVEN ON TIME!!!! I was shocked when I walked into the cool auditorium on this World Wide Knitting In Public Day at HKC at The George Bruce Branch Library! Only 3 new people came and most of my regulars didn't come to our usual Saturday meeting! Myself, Naomi Dagen Bloom, Zina-HKC's supervisor, her sister Jackie, and three other regulars arrived. All together we totaled 11 people.
HKC hasn't had that little of a population since we first opened. I guess the thought of condoms were pushing the limits, because our lace class last month we had about 90 people! I sat down and thought about it. I'd done the same marketing of this event that I always do, but I realized that the topic of this event made people take pause. Safe Sex. HIV. AIDS. I guess if we close our eyes, if we turn away the boogey-man will go away. No people that's not going to happen. Not for the growing numbers of African American woman who are infected, the teens who's number rise, and the senior citizen's due to the introduction of Viagra! HIV/AIDS is as common as Wonder Bread is a staple in many kitchens. So..., what do I do? Well, there will be another SAFE SEX AWARENESS KNIT/CROCET OUT this fall at HKC. If you're interested in helping me to organize it email me ASAP!

HKC will be participating in the World Wide Knit In Public Day:
WWKIP DAY IN HARLEM: KNITTING CONDOM AMULETS
HKC Teacher Of The Day: Naomi Dagen Bloom, www.KnitaCondomAmulet.com and www.alittleredhen.com has been creating these amulets for the past three years as an awareness project to encourage Safe Sex and support of those with HIV/AIDS, will teach two techniques--Double knitting to make a seamless Condom Amulet and an easy lace stitch.,
Materials: A
ll that's needed to bring is leftover yarn to make an amulet. Naomi will have a couple of samples for people to try out the two stitches she's demonstrating. She usually uses size 6/7 knitting needles but it depends on the yarn and amulet idea.
